Grand Morocco Journey

Grand Morocco Journey

Ten days, Morocco from end to end. A city painted entirely blue in the Rif Mountains. The world's oldest university city. Cedar forests with wild Barbary macaques. The tallest sand dunes in North Africa. A UNESCO kasbah used by Ridley Scott and David Lean. The ancient red city to close. This is Morocco properly told.

Arrive Tangier · The Blue City

Private pickup at Tangier Ibn Batouta Airport with a personalised Marrakech Story sign. Transfer to Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains (115 km, ~2 hours). The road climbs through cedar forest; the first blue-washed walls appear between the trees. Hotel check-in. Welcome mint tea. Evening walk into the blue medina.

The Blue Medina

Certified guide half-day: Place Uta el-Hammam, 15th-century kasbah, Andalusian fountain, blue alleyways in morning light. Ras El Ma spring — women still wash laundry here in the traditional manner. Spanish Mosque viewpoint: 360° panorama of the blue city and Rif Mountains. Free afternoon: Ras El Ma waterfall hike (30 min), souvenir shopping, late afternoon photography in the blue-hour light.

Drive to the Ancient City

Scenic drive from the Rif Mountains to Fes (200 km, ~4 hours with stops). Through cork oak and cedar forests, Rif ridgelines, Middle Atlas plain. Lunch stop en route at Ouazzane. Arrive Fes — a riad porter carries your luggage through medina lanes too narrow for vehicles. Free evening.

World's Oldest Living City

Full-day specialist guide: Chouara tanneries viewed from rooftop terraces (120 stone vats of natural dye — a mint sprig is provided against the smell), Al-Qarawiyyin — the world's oldest continuously operating university, founded 859 AD by a woman; Bou Inania Madrasa, the Metalworkers' Souk, Nejjarine fountain, living neighbourhood streets. Lunch inside the Medina. Optional afternoon: pottery village, hammam, Marinid Tombs panorama.

The Great Crossing

Early departure (08:30). Azrou cedar forest stop — 600-year-old cedars, Barbary macaques (the only wild primate in Africa north of the Sahara). Through Midelt and the Atlas passes (1,900m). Erfoud fossil capital. Rissani: birthplace of the Alaoui dynasty ruling Morocco since 1666. Final 30 km: the road becomes ruler-straight as the 150m dunes appear on the horizon. Camel trek at golden hour. Gnawa welcome. Dinner under the stars.

A Full Day in the Dunes

No driving. Sahara sunrise at 06:00 — the dunes turn gold, the Milky Way fades. Free morning: Bedouin family visit in the outer desert (seasonal), jeep excursion into the dunes, sandboarding, or complete rest. Lunch near Merzouga village. Afternoon at the pool or in shade. Second sunset from the dunes. Final desert dinner.

Todra Gorges & Dades Valley

Return from dunes by camel or 4x4. Breakfast. Drive to Todra Gorges (100 km, 90 min) — walls rise 300m from a floor just 10m wide, fed by Atlas snowmelt year-round. Flat 2 km walk through the canyon. Through Tinghir palm oasis (11,000 hectares of date palms). Dades Valley arrival. Dinner included at guesthouse.

Kasbah & Atlas Return

Ouarzazate: optional Atlas Studios visit (~40 MAD). Aït Ben Haddou UNESCO kasbah in morning light — less crowded, best photography, guided 1.5h visit. Lunch near Aït Ben Haddou. Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m, summit photo stop). Arrive Marrakech riad. Dinner at leisure.
